At one point in my life I had a whole bunch of table top games. I had all kinds of them such as Dungeons and Dragons, Gurps, Hero System, Rifts, and a lot more. Funny enough I didn’t pack them away properly and we had a pretty light fire in the basement from the heater. Of course when the heater went out it got really cold and a pipe broke. All of that has been long since fixed, since these incidents happened over 10 years ago.

I went down in the basement today to get my Hero System rule books, and that’s when I noticed…

this…

Unfortunately when the heater wen it took my half books with it. All of the campaigns that my brother and I had written, all the rule books for almost every table top role playing game that we had. All gone. So… I’m starting over fresh. This is going to be a fresh start for me if I want to start playing these again.

I had Troy vs Troy running at a decent speed. I had 3 players almost working. One player was controlled by the user, the second player was controlled by AI(Randomly running in a circle) and the Third. Well the Third was going to work via network. That was until I went to Wizard World East(in Philadelphia). After that happened I shelved Troy vs Troy and decided to focus solely on Travis vs Troy.

In my infancy(my actual experience) regarding AI programming, I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to do things this time around. I’m not going to lie or hide anything that I’m doing this time around. I’m going to try and document/blog better this time around and talk of my mistakes and shortcomings. So here’s a few things about this competition.

The Rules
1. Travis got a two week head start on me because …
2. It has to be a platform game. (I’ve built one before so I had an advantage)
3. The game has to work within a website. (This loose rule has me scared what Travis may pull off)
4. The competition ends on August 31st.
5. The game has to be written in Flash. (This was a damper because I was going to try something very slick.)

The Game
So with these four rules I’ve decide to revisit the concept of a literal “Travis vs Troy” concept. The main character is going to be Travis (voices by yours truly) and the antagonist is going to be MrTroy (voiced by Mikey McFly). And since I’ve already had experience with building a platformer, I want to dedicate more time towards building something very polished. As I was saying above I went to Wizard World East and I saw the New Grounds booth and thought to myself. Maybe I should make something very polished instead of thinking of only functional.

So… at the time of this writing I can only say this…
“Abuse” – Look it up. It’s what I’m attempting.

Below is link to the “Banner Game”. I know it says you win a free poster, but that was mainly put in there to look authentic. I mainly did more focusing on the actual functionality of the game than I did the look, yet there are still a few things I have issues with.Mainly it is not even close to being polished. I’m going to go back and fix/add things later, but for now I need a break from it.

Finally! Day one of Trav’s defeat. Two months to complete a small web game. I didn’t think it would be enough time for me to complete something…. but then I started working first thing this morning I started figuring out my schedule. The first Month is going to be Design and Building. The second Month is going to be all about polishing it. It’s amazing that not being able to write anything down on paper nor build any part of it has HELPED me flesh out the design and architecture better.

Well starting today Travis should prepare to have his cheeks handed to him… and women shouldn’t wear white pumps till memorial day.

Wish me luck.
